Coupe Banke Nationale: Heather Watson reaches quarter-finals but Naomi Broady out

Heather Watson is the world 107 and has won three WTA titles in her career

British number three Heather Watson is through to the quarters-finals of the Coupe Banke Nationale in Quebec City, with a straight sets win against Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez.

Watson, 26, beat 16-year-old Fernandez 6-4 7-5 in one hour 33 minutes.

Unseeded Watson will play Spain’s Georgina Garcia Perez or Canada’s Rebecca Marino in the next round.

But Naomi Broady is out, after the British number four lost 6-1 6-1 to Croatian second seed Petra Martic.

World number 161 Broady won the first game of the match, but then lost the next 11.
