Trump compares Mueller probe to McCarthyism

US News
"Study the late Joseph McCarthy, because we are now in period with Mueller and his gang that make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby! Rigged Witch Hunt!," Trump tweeted.McCarthy led a Cold War-era inquisition of alleged Communists who he claimed had infiltrated American governmental institutions. A special Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee investigated McCarthy's initial claims about Communists infiltrating the State Department and found them to be "a fraud and a hoax." Upon becoming chairman of the Senate Government Operations Committee's subcommittee on investigations in 1953, McCarthy expanded his probes into alleged communist activity. In 1954,...

What Mueller and Manafort need to do in closing arguments

US News
Wednesday morning, special counsel Robert Mueller's team and Manafort's defense lawyers will deliver their closing arguments -- sure to be impassioned, detailed speeches that look back over the 10 days of testimony. Then the jury will deliberate the 18 criminal bank fraud, tax and foreign banking charges. This is the first case brought to trial by Mueller, who is currently leading the probe into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Here's what both sides may tell the jury on Wednesday:ProsecutorsWithout a doubt, the prosecution will try to convince the jury that Manafort sent fake documents to banks, lied to his accountants and bookkeeper, signed federal disclosures that failed to report his foreign banking to federal agencies, and pushed his Ukrainian l...
Nobody did more damage to Robert Mueller than Peter Strzok

Nobody did more damage to Robert Mueller than Peter Strzok

US News
by Aaron Blake August 13 at 1:58 PM Email the author Peter Strzok has been fired by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As The Post’s Matt Zapotosky reports, that makes him the third high-ranking FBI official involved in the Russia investigation to be terminated, along with former FBI director James B. Comey and the bureau’s now-former No. 2, Andrew McCabe. This has led some to defend Strzok or at least question his firing — suggesting that his downfall is merely the latest result of an effort to obstruct justice and tear down all those who know what really happened in 2016.
